Sudhendu Roys crowning glory was Yash Chopras Kala Patthar.The set of the mine was built at the farm of Raj Kapoor,the conveyor belt,the power transformer, the dhabas,the houses of the workers,the hospital everything.The set of the underground mine was built in Film City.A leading lady of the film thought that it was a real location.Another film was Mashaal,also made by Yash Chopra.The set of the slum where bulk of the film was shot was built at Rajkamal Kalamandir.Sound recordist Mangesh Desai would wonder as to how overnight a slum has come up in the studio premises.Ramesh Sippys Shaan was another film which challenged me as an art director.The den of the villain was made of sun mica.To make him look menacing a statue of a huge bird was built.There was a pool where Mr Bachchan fights with a crocodile. Shakti had very compact sets.The scenes in the police station and the house where Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan have a verbal conflict could not have the right impact if the set was large.The film was shot in mid and close and therefore the sets had to be compact.Akayala also made by Ramesh Sippy had compact sets which was in keeping with the middle class ambience of the film.
