“Suffering can occur when physicians do not validate the patient’s pain. In the absence of disease, physicians may suggest that the pain is ‘psychological’ (in the sense of not being real) or that the patient is ‘faking.’ Similarly, patients with chronic pain may believe after a time that they can no longer talk to others about their distress.
