Sugar consumption leads to increases in weight gain and contributes to risk of cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, diabetes). Sugar has little nutritional value and once digested, and is rapidly absorbed resulting in its storage within the liver and muscles as glycogen. If the liver and muscles have reached their maximum capacity, glucose is then converted to a fatty acid form. Alternatively, glucose levels need to be sufficiently depleted before fatty acid oxidation becomes priority.
