Sugar doesnt just make things taste amazing, it actually evokes a response in the brain similar to the one that happens when snorting coke. A recent study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that refined, sweet foods elicit activity from the brain in the right nucleus accumbens, the brain’s “pleasure center” that affects our motivation, pleasure and addiction. This study also found that the sugary foods make us feel more hungry, and leaves us wanting more food in comparison to low-glycemic foods. Not only that - but sugar also elicits a significant dopamine response, leading to abuse by which we consume more than we need because it overrides our body’s ability to tell our brain we’re full. Your “sweet tooth” may actually be your drug addiction of choice.
