Suggested Reading: The Foe Within: Fantasies of Treason and the End of Imperial Russia By William C. Fuller. Countess Magdalena Lilly Nostits [see attached photographs] was the wife of Count Grigorii Ivanovich Nostits. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, the Count was a military agent in France and Germany and reported directly to Nicholas. Later on, he was a Major-General in Nicholass suite and a Chief of Staff of the Guards (between 1912 and 1915). During World War I spy mania gripped Imperial Russia and there was a suspicion that a major general in Nicholassl suite might be a German agent. The Counts wife Lilly was an American adventurous was suspected of peddling secrets to the enemy,however, nothing could be done because she was too highly placed in society and a favourite of the diplomatic corps. To complicate matters even more, the Countess was a personal friend of Anna Vyrubova a confidant and friend to Alexandra. The only way to resolve the matter was to deny the Count any access to sensitive information which he vigorously protested and to place members of the Russian military friendly with the Countess under observation. During the Revolution the properties of the Count were confiscated by the Bolsheviks and he and his wife fled to Paris, where he died in the late 1920s.
