Sukkot: Sukkot commemorates our life in the desert, when we lived in sukkot (huts) for 40 years. There are many requirements according to Jewish law (halacha) regarding the schach (the roof of the sukka) (a schach must be made from a substance that grows from the ground, the schach may not be too thick, etc ...) to ensure that the sukkah (hut) has the status of a temporary dwelling, and not a permanent dwelling. When we lived in sukkot (huts) in the desert, we were surrounded by clouds of glory that were sent to protect us from any possible harm. The Torah relates that our path was not determined by anyone’s navigational skills, but according to the direction taken by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, through Divine Inspiration.
