Sukkot, the Biblical Feast Of Tabernacles. It was to be a time of remembrance for the nation of Israel when they lived in booths in the wilderness. It was to be a reenactment of life with hope but no home, of the travail of travel, of the frailty of the human frame and the overarching care of God throughout any and all of these. Even in our modern-day society, we are reminded daily that the sturdiest of our homes are but dust when pitted against raging wildfires or ravaging floods. God calls us to look to our past to remember from whence we have come and to see His hand in all our travels and travails. My own family comes from a small shtetl named Brody in what was then Austria, later Poland and now Ukraine. Like millions of Jews, we were driven out of our homes and villages by pogroms meant to demoralize and discourage us. And so we came to America. Hundreds of thousands of us landed in a place called Brooklyn. When I was a young boy, you could drive down Eastern Parkway and see the Sukkahs lined one after another on the backyard terraces of the brownstones, a reminder that even when no roof rests over our heads, we have a clear shot at the One who shelters all in the shadow of His wings.
