Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar 111, has declared Sunday as the day for Eid-il-Fitr festival to mark the end of the Ramadan fast. Speaking in his palace in Sokoto Saturday night, the monarch stated that in line with the laid down Islamic rules and regulations, the new moon of Shawwal was sighted on Saturday 29th day of Ramadan 1435 H equivalent to July 26, 2014. According to him, the new moon of Shawwal was sighted in the Northern part of the country. The Sultan stated that information regarding the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal was received from prominent traditional leaders across the country which include the Shehu of Borno, Lamido of Adamawa, Emir of Katsina, Emir of Daura, Emir of Zuru, Emir of Hadeija, Emir of Zazzau in Kaduna state, Emir of Anka in Zamfara state, Emir of Kontagora in Niger state and some parts of Sokoto state. “Consequent upon this, tomorrow July 27 becomes the first day of Shawwal 1435 H and the day to mark the Eid-il-fitr,”he said. The monarch prayed God to accept the supplications and worship made during the Ramadan fast. While congratulating the Muslim Ummah for the completion of the Ramadan fast, the Sultan prayed God to bestow blessing on those who fasted during the Ramadan. President Goodlucj Jonathan has felicitated with Muslims across the country. In his Eid-el-fitri messgae, the President said: I congratulate all of our countrymen and women who have successfully undertaken the purifying Ramadan fast. As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitri, it is my hope and prayer that Ramadan’s spiritual lessons and the Holy Prophet’s teachings of piety, love, justice, fairness, equity, peaceful co-existence with others, tolerance, honesty and dedication to duty will remain with us all for the benefit and greater glory of our dear nation. May the lessons and blessings of the Holy Month also permeate into us all, and positively influence our attitudes towards our fellow countrymen and women, irrespective of their religion or places of origin; and promote greater commitment to the peace, unity and stability of the nation.
