Summer time is here and as the 4th of July nears it brings with it fond memories of our annual trip to Ericksens lake. It may have only been a few miles from home, but for at least a week every year it became our home away from home. The memories of Mom come flying into my mind. Mom loved the lake and everything about it. Everyday breakfast was pancakes, bacon/sausage and eggs cooked over the campfire. Wed even do dishes with lake water boiled on the fire. There was always at least one fish fry and nothing like steaks over that fire. As my birthday was during this vacation, I remember her coming to the tent to wake me up and wish me happy birthday. One year this even included being pulled off to the lake. And I cant forget to mention the homemade ice cream. Not from one of those electric machines of today. Nope Uncle Theo would supervise the cranking and everyone got a turn. Best ice cream ever! Oh and there was always the rumble from the bridge so wed know someone was coming. Quite fun to guess who might come over that hill. Now I am old enough to remember camping on the south side of the lake in the trees and swimming from the east end of the lake which at the time was the rocks on the west side of the dam. Quite a difference from the lake of today. We worked for our vacation time at the lake. There was always weeding, mowing, laundry, dishes etc. to be done. Mom and Aunt Kathryn kept us busy and there was no whining you were bored. Swimming time was earned. Those were the days! This year with the legacy tree lost to the storm, with mom and Uncle Theo both departed from us, these memories are bittersweet. However, I am sure they both still spend a little bit of their time in heaven watching over the lake, sitting by the fire or casting a reel out. Thanks to Aunt Kathryn, Uncle Theo and their families for allowing us to share this little bit of heaven on earth!
