Legend has it that in 1791 a Dublin theater owner named James Daly made a bet that he could introduce a word into the English language within twenty-four hours. He then went out and hired a group of street urchins to write the (nonsense) word on walls around the city of Dublin. Within a day, the word had entered common parlance, and Daly won his bet. Urban myths aside, the first recorded appearance of the word was in 1791, and it was used to refer to an odd person. What was the word?
