Summer’s here! Schools are finishing for the summer, but it also marks the start of some busy weeks for the team at Youth for Christ North East. Next week we have teams helping with mission weeks in Hebburn and Hexham using the sports cage and engaging with young people in the local areas through conversations, activities and local events. We then have members of the team serving at New Wine, Soul Survivor and Kairos. We have had an exciting few weeks, with the world cup whetting the appetite for churches and youth groups to run some football based events so the football cage is in demand. We have also been working with 5 young people at the risk of exclusion from mainstream education, alongside a school and local church. We have seen encouraging transformations and progression with these young people… the words from our January staff conference by Mark Ostriecher ringing fresh in my ears reminding us of our calling to ‘Love the unloved and choose the unchosen’. We have expanded our work in Blaydon and are more involved in schools work and mentoring as part of our valuable partnership with the Salvation Army. Finally some really exciting news, Laura McAthey will be joining our staff team, after YFC were appointed to provide an assistant chaplain in Dame Allan’s School. From September Laura will spend 2 days a week in the school befriending the pupils and resourcing activities run by the chaplaincy. We are hoping this will lead to similar work in other schools too. Please pray for: • Our teams at the mission weeks in Hebburn and Hexham, for protection and safety as they run activities and programmes and especially fruitful conversations about Jesus with young people we meet. • John as leads the 11-14’s work at New Wine week B, heading up a team of 90 volunteer leaders and the programme for 600 young people • For the new opportunity at Dame Allan’s School that Laura would quickly find her feet in this new pioneering role for YFC and especially for funding to come in to enable Laura to start in September. Have a very blessed summer! John Hawksworth
