About the location Welcome to Russia: The location of Elbrus allows for an experience into the myriad of Turkish, Georgian, Azerbaydzhani and Russian cultures. The expedition begins and ends in Mineralyne Vody (IATA Airport Code MRV) where you will take a taxi to Piatagorsk town and meet with experienced leader Dan Mazur and get to know one another before heading for the mountains. Here you can rent climbing gear if you don’t have it already. Its very easy to fly to MRV from anywhere in the world. For example, there are more than ten flights to MRV each day from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Climbing Elbrus: At 18,541 feet/5653 metres, Elbrus is a glaciated, twin-coned volcano that dominates the Caucuses Range of Russia. From Terskol Village a tram and ski lifts will carry us up the lower mountain to the Barrel Huts at 3800 metres/12,500 feet and located on the flank of Elbrus where we will begin our snow climbing ascent of the mountain. This is a fun spot to meet other international climbing teams from around the world. From the huts we can take snowcat tractors to high on the mountain, easing our ascent. Our trip features glacier travel training together with you and leader Dan Mazur. After that, we will take a walk up to the Pastukhov Rocks at about 15,000 feet /4550 metres for acclimatization. We descend back to the Barrels Huts and have a rest day, followed by summit day all the way to the top of the highest peak in Europe! History: The word Elbrus means guardian or protector and its lower summit was first climbed by a Russian scientific expedition in 1829. Later, in 1874, its higher summit was climbed by an English team. Weather: The best time to climb Mount Elbrus is July/August, when the weather is warmer and the famous Caucasus wind and snow storms are at their minimum.
