Just outside Miami you’ll find Villa Vizcaya, an estate built in the image of old style Italian country villas. The buildings of the estate were constructed using only materials from Spain and Italy as well as pieces of real castles that were taken down, shipped by boat and reassembled on site bringing a bit of authentic Europe to Florida. The villa’s grand scale called for murals, tapestries and furniture, also shipped in from Europe, suitable for such an expressive home. Following the conversion of the main house and a portion of its 180 acres into a museum many of the original furnishings remain, to the delight of today’s visitors. For only $5, visitors can explore rooms of the main house and stroll the grounds and gardens escorted only by a 90-minute audio tour. You may want to use this time to imagine how it felt to call Vizacaya home.
