Sun Returns This Afternoon. Another Storm Targets Western Mass. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Today is shaping up to be the calm before the storm. If you have not had the chance to clear the snow from yesterdays storm you will want to get it done today as another winter storm is setting its sights on Western Massachusetts. Clouds this morning will give way to partly to mostly sunny skies this afternoon. There will be a bit of a breeze this afternoon with westerly winds between 5-15 mph. Highs today will top out in the lower 30s. Tonight we can expect partly cloudy skies and light winds. That will allow temperatures to fall off quickly after sunset and lows tonight bottom out in the single digits. A Winter Storm Watch goes into effect for all of Western Massachusetts at 7 pm Monday evening and will continue until 1 am Wednesday morning. Clouds move in tomorrow morning, and a storm is growing likely late in the day into Tuesday. Unlike the most recent storm, the ingredients for a robust snowstorm will be in place come Monday. High pressure centered over Quebec will provide fresh cold. In fact, temperatures Monday morning will be in the single digits. Secondly, blocking over the Canadian maritime will slow the storm. A clipper diving southeast will hit the Carolina coast, and rapidly strengthen. The probability that storm takes a favorable track up the coast has grown substantially. Snow develops tomorrow afternoon and will continue Monday night and through the day on Tuesday. The snow could come down heavy at times with snowfall rates of over 1″ per hour possible at times. Early estimates on snowfall for the region is in the 14-18″ range. Keep in mind these are very early estimates and will probably need to be tweaked as we go through the day today into tonight.
