Sun Xmas day: Much cloud, intermittent rain and even hail this - TopicsExpress

Sun Xmas day: Much cloud, intermittent rain and even hail this morning. Brightening temporarily early afternoon but skies increasingly gloomy and wintry from the west. White light activity has to a large extent declined in the past 24hrs but AR2249 has developed from nowhere into a bipolar, with parallel pairs of cores, thats a conspicuous addition to the SW quadrant. In the NE quadrant AR2246 is the next most conspicuous sunspot but unchanged since yesterday. Other active regions seem to have declined or disappeared. In H-alpha the disc is still fairly quiet. Plage is associated with several of yesterdays sunspots and with the new AR2249 but activity is modest. No flares were observed. A short dark filament is visible between the main components of AR2249 flanked by plage and apparently erupting from a small hotspot near the following component. Otherwise, dark filaments are not particularly evident other than a few blobbies here and there on the disc. Prominence activity has increased in the past 24hrs with a fine row of trees developing along a 365,000km hearth on the eastern limb and a narrow fountain on the NE limb erupting to 47,000km. A very nice, slim and slightly inclined eruptive pillar, with bright knots, is visible on the W limb extending to about 80,000km in length...one of the best Ive seen in recent months. Now then, wheres the turkey and my glass of Merlot? Cheers! ...and the very best wishes and good health to you all.
