Sun drenched the square surrounding the Shelby County Courthouse as a strong breeze blew leaves across the northwest corner where the statue of Lady Justice stood perched above listened Tuesday to three speakers on Veterans Day. Ed Garrett, who served in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, talked about his military lineage and passing the importance of thanking military personnel for protecting the rights of Americans. “This is what I wanted noted out of everything that is said this day — our military and our government will continue to suffer if our citizens are not heard and our veterans are not respected,” Garrett said at the podium standing in front of Color Guard and the American Legion Post 217 Firing Squad to his left. “It is the veteran not the preacher who has given us freedom of religion, it is the veteran not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press, it is the veteran not the poet who has given us freedom of speech, it is the veteran not the organizer who has given us freedom of assembly, it is the veteran not the lawyer who has given us the right to be free until a trial by our peers, it is the veteran not the politician who has given us the right to vote.” More... thesidneypost/veterans-honored-for-securing-freedoms/
