Sunday - back roaded it from Lopburi to Thoen, what an adventure. Everyone has been to Hua Hin but who (apart from me and Dtoi) can say they have been to Taphan Hin? Got a driving lesson too! Westerners are so rigidly fixated with traffic rules; Thais do not let traffic laws interfere with practicality. We were driving north up a road with 2 lanes and 2 shoulders. The northbound traffic was sparse to sporadic but the Bangkok weekend traffic was starting to return home so the southbound lane was bumper to bumper. Some Bangkokian took the executive decision that southbound ruled on the 2 road lanes and northbound should be happy with the shoulder. This resulted in me happily driving along in my lane when a southbounder pulled out to overtake some 20 metres ahead of me and we were literally nose to nose. An instant decision was required - either swerve onto the shoulder immediately or do a high speed head-on collision. It was kind of a no-brainer. After learning this trick I got the chance to try it out when northbound was backed up and southbound was sort of sparse. It was hilarious. I pulled out in front of one bright spark who decided to flash his full beams to persuade me to get back into my proper lane. He came to 2 realizations spontaneously - 1. I had no idea what my proper lane was and 2. full beams offered little protection in a high speed head-on collision. He swerved onto the shoulder. I love Thailand!
