Sunday 10 August 2014 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Vespers INTRODUCTION O God, come to our aid. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. -------------------------------- Hymn In the beginning God created heaven, The dark and empty earth; His Spirit moved across the sombre waters And stirred them with his breath. Then God created light, and with its coming The dark was swept away; The morning came, and then the quiet evening: The end of God’s first day. To God the Father of the world give glory, With Christ his only Son, Who with the Spirit govern all creation: Blest Trinity in One. ------------------------------- Psalm 110 (NIV) 1 The Lord says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” 2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of your enemies!” 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendour, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb. 4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook along the way, and so he will lift his head high. ------------------------------------ Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. ------------------------------------ Psalm 111 (NIV) 1 Praise the Lord. I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. 2 Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. 3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate. 5 He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. 6 He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations. 7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. 8 They are established for ever and ever, enacted in faithfulness and uprightness. 9 He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever— holy and awesome is his name. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. -------------------------------------- Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. -------------------------------------- Canticle:Revelation 19 A Song of the Lamb 1 Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, whose judgements are true and just. 2 Praise our God, all you his servants, all who fear him, both small and great. 3 The Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns: let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory. 4 For the marriage of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready. 5 Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding banquet of the Lamb. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen ------------------------------------ Short Reading:1 Peter 1:3-5 (NIV) Praise to God for a Living Hope 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. ------------------------------------- Short Responsory Blessed are you, O Lord, in the vault of heaven. – Blessed are you, O Lord, in the vault of heaven. You are exalted and glorified above all else for ever. – Blessed are you, O Lord, in the vault of heaven. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. – Blessed are you, O Lord, in the vault of heaven. ------------------------------------ Canticle:Magnificat My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. -------------------------------- Prayers and intercessions: God is ever creative. His love renews all things and is the source of our hope. Let us turn to him in confidence: – Lord, accept our thanks and our prayers. We give thanks for the order of created things: you have blessed us with the resources of the earth and the gift of human life. – Lord, accept our thanks and our prayers. We give thanks for man’s share in your continuing work of creation: we praise you for your gifts to him of inventive skill and creative vision. – Lord, accept our thanks and our prayers. We pray for all the nations of the world: may those in authority work for peace and goodwill among men. – Lord, accept our thanks and our prayers. We pray for all who are homeless today: we pray for families searching for a place to live, and for refugees driven from their homeland. – Lord, accept our thanks and our prayers. Life was your first gift to us: may those who have died come to its fulness in you. – Lord, accept our thanks and our prayers. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Almighty, ever-living God, we confidently call you Father as well as Lord. Renew your Spirit in our hearts: make us ever more perfectly your children, so that we may enter upon the inheritance you have promised us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
