Sunday, January 11, 2015 This is a REALLY cool idea from an elder. Choose New Years Eve or Thanksgiving each year. Have a blessed day! Several years ago while on vacation, I went into an antique store and found a huge, old glass peanut butter jar. I fell in love with it. Having absolutely no use for it, as well as it not being able to fit it in my suitcase, I sadly departed leaving it on the shelf for someone else to treasure. Later that year at Christmas, there was a box under the tree for me that my husband insisted I open last. To my amazement and utter joy, there it was, my peanut butter jar! He had called the store to see if it was still there and had it shipped to him the week we returned home. As I said, I had absolutely no use for it, but I found one. I put a little note in it that day and every day until New Year’s about something I am thankful for. Every year since, at the beginning of the year and throughout the year I put a little note of thanksgiving concerning what we did as a family, or how God provided in a situation, from silly to serious. Every New Years Eve we open that jar and read each one. There have been so many times I have forgotten the things that had happened until we read the notes. Its a wonderful time that I enjoy each year remembering the faithfulness of God. I often look at that jar and think of our heavenly Fathers peanut butter jar. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:19-21). In general, we are a world of hoarders. We hoard pride, possessions, money, food, insecurities, job security, etc. But do we ever stop to think about our heavenly hoarding? We are to store up treasures in heaven, not here on earth. God is so faithful and wants to show His faithfulness to us each day if we will simply allow Him. We are to trust in God, acknowledge Him in every area, and enjoy walking in Gods plan for our lives. Only then will our jar simply run over, allowing us to see the faithfulness of God so abundantly that we want to share it with others. I pray that this year is the year we see the beauty of God through His Word, His promises, and His unfailing love towards us. Psalm 119:33-40: Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end.[a] 34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. 35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. 36 Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. 37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.[b] 38 Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. 39 Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. 40 How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.
