Sunday, March 23, 2014 “OUR DAILY BREAD” Topic: Prayer in the Hour of Temptation. Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Text: Matthew 26:31-46, 69-75 The instructive meditational verse above came from Jesus to Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. It was the last major instruction Jesus gave his disciples before He was led to the place of crucifixion. In this verse we see the part we are to play if we will not fall into temptation. We are to watch, that is take heed; be vigilant; be observant; be alert. Then, in the process of watchfulness, we are admonished to pray. Peter, before going with Jesus to Gethsemane, had ‘felt’ strong, maybe he even felt stronger than other disciples. That should have been a warning sign to any vigilant person. He began to assert his willingness and readiness to die with Christ even if others forsook him. Yet he denied that he knew Christ, even swearing and cursing! One lesson we can learn here is in 1Corinthians 10:12 “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall”. We can rightfully deduce that: We are most likely closest to temptation when we feel very ‘big’ or ‘strong’. Such is a time we need to humble ourself and pray. Another warning sign which eluded Peter was the prophecy of christ which he overlooked. Jesus said unto him (probably in a calm tone), Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.” (Matthew 26:34) Many times, the Spirit of God warns us to be careful, (in His calm voice as well) , but oft times we ignore His warning. Finally, Jesus gave Peter the solution to the problem ahead, BUT, he was sleepy, and did not pray that night. One great lesson we can learn from this is that tiredness and sleepiness are not viable excuses with God. Also, the devil does not excuse us from temptation because we were sleeping when we ought to be praying. Jesus came to the disciples three times, hinting them that it was serious battle time, BUT, they couldn’t pick up the hinting. It was quite a sad time, yet, the same words come to us: PRAY, THAT YE ENTER NOT INTO TEMPTATION. FROM THE KINGDOM OF GOD EVANGELICAL TEAM
