Sunday Message 10/5/14- A Thorn In The Flesh-1Samuel, 18:9- 24:12 - issues raise up in our church because issues arise in our lives, however There is no need to lose faith , hope, love or unity and begin to disintegrate from within, the devil is doing enough on the outside to try to destroy the Lords work. What to do when you have a thorn in your flesh -a negative situation or an offense that continues to occur in your life or relationship real or imagined- is an issue that has to be dealt with and its not dealt with by feelings or senses but with the word of God. David faced a situation in his life where someone had continuos offensive conduct towards him. Saul was a continuous thorn in Davids flesh even though David had done nothing to Saul. A thorn in the flesh can be a situation or person or affliction that just wont stop being a bother to your life. Saul pursued David, trying to kill him for 8-10 years. In this we can see what the word of God says about these type of situations we face. We are responsible for the information God gives to us, what we do with it determines if God says well done thy good and faithful servant, enter in to my joy or if it will be taken away and we lose joy. Davids relationship with Saul was filled with constant, agitation and unwarranted attacks, this was a thorn in Davids flesh, however it was part of Gods bigger plan for him. Jealousy, rebellion, pride, suspicion and lack of wisdom had consumed Saul because The Lord had made his judgment upon Sauls life due to his past sins against God, so Saul chose to take it out on David, rather than submit to God. Contributors to this reoccurring situation or thorn in the flesh- -Saul was suffering for the consequences of disobeying God-1Samuel 13, 15 Saul was not Controlled by the Holy Spirit- Gods leading had departed from him. 1Samuel 16:4 ; 18: 19- He was working by his own power and leaning to his own understanding. Saul was concerned with how people perceived him.- Saul killed his thousands David killed his ten thousands- 1Samuel 18:1-9- he felt David had stolen his thunder. David did not make the statement, others did. Saul imagined that David was offending him. Saul was more concerned with his position than pleasing The Lord- 1Samuel 18:8- Saul suspected David was trying to take his position and was trying to keep it, even though The Lord had taken it away. Sauls only motive was to destroy David even though the situation was conceived in his own mind and God had orchestrated the events not David. In reality Saul was fighting against Gods plan . 1Samuel 19:25-29 -Saul was a thorn to his own flesh as well as David. What To Do... Recognize God protects you- Saul sent men to take David but they began to prophesy, 3 times Saul sent men but each time they prophesied,,the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit was protecting David . -1Samuel 19:21- No weapon formed against you will prosper when God is with you. David behaved himself Wisely-1Samuel 18:14- He walked circumspect, upright - Psalm 84:11 David focus was on Gods work - 1Samuel 23:4-God told David to go and save the people of Keilah while Saul was trying to kill him . David kept Gods work as top priority. In the midst of ongoing situations in your life, God still wants you to assist him in saving others. David desired bread from the -tabernacle(food from God s house-1Samuel 21:6 -David received special provisions from the house of The Lord. he needed more than common bread. The priest gave him hallowed bread( represents bread from heaven) . Associate with those who will strengthen you in God. Rather those who gossip or cosign -1Samuel 23:16- Jonathan Saul s son was a friend to David that Strengthened David in The Lord while David was dealing with Saul who was a thorn in his flesh. Overcome evil with good -1Samuel 24:18-David ignored the chance to stick it to Saul. David had a chance to kill Saul , but did not because he honored The position He was in at the time he was Gods anointed. David treated him royally. David sought to please God, rather than man-1Samuel 26-even after Saul agreed to discontinue bothering David, here he comes again. Davids men told him to let them kill Saul But David would not let them. David desired to please God. When a mans ways please God, He will make your enemies to be at peace with you. Proverbs 16:7
