Sunday Mornin Hope : Spit out the bones. Mt 6:34 - So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Lu 12:28 - But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith! One of my friends and fellow jail chaplains told me an interesting story a few years ago. He was near the top of a large steel manufacturer. He would travel around the world and check different plants they owned. One time he flew into Detroit in the middle of a snow storm. As he waited in the airport, he watched the screens for his next connecting flight. After a few hours of seeing cancelled on almost every flight in and out he approached the counter. He said to the ticket agent Mam, When is the next flight for Detroit? She looked hard at him in the face and responded Sir. We are in Detroit. He was so tired, he didnt realize he was already there. He told me of another time when he was visiting a steel mill in Korea. He said there are mountains of Maytag and Whirlpool washers, dryers, refrigerators. They buy all of our old appliances and make Kias, Hundais and other small cars. We might just be driving our old refrigerator. While he was there, he was invited to a Korean familys home for supper. They eat a lot of fish there. As he was eating the fish, he noticed it had a lot of bones. The family was really going at it like it was steak (bones and all). After they finished a fish, they would turn their head and spit out about a hundred tiny bones. They could eat a whole fish with bones and not swallow the bones. There are people in our lives that give us words that are full of bones. As you listen to them they will say some nice things then dump on you. They will complain about this and that. Its like they have nothing good to say, once they have your attention. If youre not careful, you will have a belly or head full of bones. Then you walk away with a poor attitude too. Some people you cant help, because they dont want it. They just want to wallow in the mud. Let them. Other people are looking for answers to their problems. Maybe theyve been treated bad by someone saying junk to them. Look them square in the face and smile as you say Spit out the bones. Then walk away. Well okay, you might need to explain that. People carry offences too easy, dont we? You can get 10 compliments and one complaint. Which one will you dwell on? The Message Bible puts a good light on how Jesus spoke to those that were worried or fussing. Look at it here in Matthew 6: 27Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? 28All this time and money wasted on fashion--do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, 29but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best--dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. 30If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers--most of which are never even seen--dont you think hell attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? 31What Im trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to Gods giving. 32People who dont know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. 33Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Dont worry about missing out. Youll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. One of my friends today kept saying My fear is that.... Often times people say My biggest fear is.... Dont take ownership of any fear. It will just torment you. The Bible says fear has torment. When someone speaks of their fear, stop them. Words are soldiers that will accomplish what is spoken. Say to them I CAN do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Quote the Word of God when stinkin thinkin tries to get into your head. Sometimes while riding or working on my bike, those dumb thoughts try to set up camp in my head. 1Cor. 10:5 says to take every thought captive. Stop worrying about the ride or the project and just enjoy it. Have a great week! Maybe Ill see you in Sturgis. Ill be wearing a black leather vest (along with 500,000 bikers). Remember Im praying for you.
