Sunday Thoughts When Tom Landry became head coach for the NFL - TopicsExpress

Sunday Thoughts When Tom Landry became head coach for the NFL expansion Dallas Cowboy football team, he brought the league into the computer age, 1960. Coach Landry measured, timed, and quantified every possible piece of data about a prospective draft choice for his team. He knew the profile of his ideal player and he relentlessly sought them out. The one quality of his ideal player Coach Landry could find no way to quantify was the athletes character; character could not be reduced to a number. How will an athlete respond when its late in the fourth quarter, the score is close, and the Cowboys need a score? Will the situation summon out the players best effort? Will he quit? How will he respond. In a sporting event, like life, character often makes the difference. It has been said of our worldly possessions, We cannot take them with us. True, but we do take much with us into the next life: the decisions weve made, the values which have guided our lives, our attitudes and actions toward other people, how we have treated our environment, what we do with the financial resources we manage. In short we take our characters into eternity. Let us use each day to deepen, strengthen, and enhance for Gods Kingdom that which carries an eternal weight of significance.
