Sundays lyrical puzzler (12/28/2014): I like to see you, but then again, that doesnt mean you mean that much to me, so if I call you, dont make a fuss, dont tell your friends about the two of us… ************* Saturdays lyrical puzzler (12/27/2014): Well, Ive tried so hard baby, but I just cant see what a woman like you is doing with me, so tell me who I see when I look in your eyes, is that you, baby… Answer: Brilliant Disguise, Bruce Springsteen, 1987 Fun fact: After the unprecedented international success of his Born in the USA album and world tour in 1984-85, and subsequent marriage to model Julianne Phillips in 1986, Bruce Springsteen found himself in a quandary personally and professionally. He felt he had done everything he could do with The E Street Band and was restless about perhaps breaking out in a new direction without his longtime cohorts. Concurrently, he knew almost right away that hed made a mistake marrying Phillips. The end result was the revealing set of introspective songs that comprised Tunnel of Love, his downbeat 1987 album that used E Street members only sparingly. The albums first single was Brilliant Disguise, which dealt with the singers confusion, jealousy and anxiety upon realizing that he and his wife had both been wearing masks that disguised the real persons underneath. Despite being a far cry from the exuberant material that had dominated his career thus far, the song reached #5 and was a regular on the concert set list during his 1988 tour, his last with the E Street Band until he reunited them 14 years later.
