Sunderland 0-1 Villa - FT: Villa claim a priceless win at the Stadium of Light thanks to Gabby Agbonlahor’s early strike. The Black Cats thought they had levelled the scores early in the second half when substitute Fabio Borini converted Steven Fletcher’s knockdown, but the linesman was quick to raise the offside flag. The home side had further efforts with Phil Bardsley and Ki Sung Yeung firing wide of the target. But Villa took control as the half went on and had several opportunities to put the game to bed. Bardsley produced a heroic diving header to clear Christian Benteke’s shot off the line after the Villa forward got the better of Valentin Roberge. And substitute Marc Albrighton found himself through on goal twice but couldn’t quite produce a finish. Firstly, he was picked out on the right by Ashley Westwood and powered an effort towards the top corner only for Vito Mannone to brilliantly tip it behind. Then a terrific team passing move sent Albrighton clear in acres of space but he couldn’t keep his shot down. Nevertheless, Agbonlahors strike was enough to give Villa the points.
