Sunderland Echo Bowls Report 14th June (unedited) The Sunderland Women’s Bowling Association held the latter stages of their Triples competition at Barnes Park this week. The final saw the Thompson Park trio of Kathy Hulley, Florence Rodenby and Anne Raine take on Roker Park’s Ann Candlish, Pat Johnson and Maureen Firth. The early exchanges saw Raine open up an 8-3 lead after eight ends before Firth responded with a couple three’s over the next three ends to level the final off at 9-9. With some fine conversion shots on show it was the Thompson Park triple that gradually ground out 13-9 lead with three ends to play, the 16th end proved decisive as Raine collected a four to lead 17-9 and with the score at 18-9 the Roker Park ladies shook hands, the final was played in bright sunshine and was very well supported. In the semi-finals the eventual winners defeated Sunderland’s Janet Sykes 16-15 while Roker Park defeated another Sunderland squad skipped by S.Rinaldi 26-3 This season’s County competitions are progressing to the second stage which means all the competitors are only three wins away from qualifying for the inaugural Bowls England National Championships at Leamington Spa in August. Locally it was the turn of the singles, pairs and two bowl singles to take the stage as the District 2 green finals were again held on neutral greens at Barnes Park. In the singles the former national title winner Silksworth’s David Bolt survived an early scare against Sunderland’s Michael Carr, Bolt turned round a 6-1 deficit to run out a 21-13 winner and in the second stage will face Owton Lodge’s T.Grainger. The all Silksworth affair saw Phil Dixon recover from 19-12 down against club mate Ian Riches to collect a four and a 21-19 win, Dixon now faces Nevilles Cross G.Alderson, the all Roker Marine affair saw two club stalwarts face each other as Bobby Graham defeated Ray Robinson 21-6 – Graham now faces Darlington RA’s John Fielding. In the pairs the three green finals were all club affairs, Silksworth’s county duo of Phil Smithson & David Bolt defeated club mates Alfie Ferguson & Terry Todd 18-16 to set up a tie against Darlington RA’s Tony Macey at Owton Lodge, the all Marine affair saw Patrick & Pete Thomson defeat club mates David Woodward & Richie Mckie 22-16 which sets up a tie against Hartlepool Old Boy’s Billy Maddison at Nevilles Cross. The remaining final was an all Barnes Park affair and was played on the West End green, Les Taylor & Albie Hill ran out 23-7 winners over Alan Thompson & Kevin Richardson – Hill now faces Hartlepool Park’s Ian Jackson at Bishop Auckland. In the three Two Bowl finals Silksworth’s Neal Ridley held his nerve to defeat club mate Phil Dixon 16-14, Marines Jimmy Richardson won a hard fought battle against club mate Keith Ford 14-12 while Marine’s Ebby Dent defeated Silksworth’s county player Michael Laydon 16-9 on West End. The current County Fours champions looked on the way out in the District 4 green final as North Biddick’s Bill Piggott led Dairy Lanes John Thurlbeck 17-2 but the county champions rallied to get back to level game with two ends to play before securing the win with a seven. To constitute a game there needed to be 72 ends played across the green and despite plans to leave three of the six rinks on to get to the 72 end mark the rain persisted and the green became unsafe, as only 63 ends were played the game was abandoned with Yorkshire leading. The game will only be replayed if it affects the final table. It’s a big weekend for the County A team as they head to Alnwick to face Northumberland in the Middleton Cup, as both teams won their opening games a victory for either side will make them favourites to reach the last eight. Durham include Silksworth’s David Bolt, Gary Farquhar, Phil Dixon, Billy Ferry, Scot Baker, Wayne Funnell, Michael Laydon and Phil Smithson. Last season the Darlington RA club lifted five of the six county titles so it’s no surprise they have nine players selected for the crunch match. The Durham County Balcombe double fours squad progressed to the regional finals day after defeating Lincolnshire 44-30 at Kirbymoorside; which is rapidly becoming Durham’s second home. Silksworth’s David Bolt skipped a rink which included club mate Phil Smithson to a 25-14 win while Stockton’s Paul Mosely secured a 19-16 win. The regional finals will take place on 21st June at Kirbymoorside, Durham face Lancashire and Cumbria face Yorkshire. Silksworth extended their lead at the top of the Earl Cup division one with a 7-0 win over winless Seaham Town, Houghton Dairy Lane lead the chasing pack after a 6-1 win at Ryhope – the top two might each other on Monday at Dairy Lane. In division two Roker Park and South Hylton enjoyed wins over Sunderland and Hetton Workmen’s respectively to fill the top two spots. In division three Washington made it four straight wins with a 7-0 win over Pemberton. With the loss of one team in each of the three Swan leagues the current league tables are somewhat fragmented, however Houghton Dairy Lane remain unbeaten at the top of the Swan Cup division one after a cracking 5-2 win at Silksworth while current holders Usworth recorded a good 6-1 win at Houghton Town. In division two Roker Park are five points clear of Herrington Workmen while Hylton CW are the early leaders in division three. In the Harold Howey division one most teams have played five games, leaders Houghton Dairy Lane B and Barnes West End are tied at the top as both enjoyed 4-0 wins over Ryhope A and Chester Le St A respectively. In division two Hylton CW A are the early leaders but only 2½ points cover the top six, Roker Park B notched their first win of the season with a 4-0 win over Sunderland A. In division three Roker Marine B are the pace setters while the all Pemberton local derby saw the Pemberton B team come out on top defeating the A team 3-1, sadly the weather washed out last weekend’s Storey Bowl fixtures although Houghton Town are unbeaten and have a three point advantage over Hetton Workmen’s, holder Seaham Town are in 4th.
