Sundown, Scott Martin. youtube/watch?v=s8rR7E6NfY4 Dear Scott Gregory Martin, It seems I only write on this forum these days when death comes trolling along. Well, that’s about to end. Not death trolling along, but me writing only when death rears its head. After this, I’m going to write again for real. Whether it be Real Estate, Insurance, Politics, Roller Derby, or various conversations I had with my parents when I was experiencing the fine print of puberty … I’m going to write. But I have to get this one off of my soul … Did you ever have one of those instances where you had so much to say and either couldn’t find the words or time ran out? To me, that’s Scott Gregory Martin. I loathe writing good things about a man who shouldn’t be gone. Or maybe he should be gone? Bottom line, he is. Martin was my buddy. Martin was my friend. At the tender age of 38, he was and is a loyal guy I knew in the game of life. Whether he is upstairs, downstairs, or scrambling around in our idea of purgatory as we know it … he’ll always be my amigo. Very few, living or dead, on this dot in the galaxy we call earth could make me laugh. Martin could. Sure, it was not your Pastor’s humor. It wasn’t Mother Teresa grabbing a coffee or your Local or National Politician shaking hands while wielding the unholiest of smiles. With Martin, shit was real. I appreciate real. And funny. He had more wit than most realized. But that’s only the second reason I fell in love with the lad that was Scott Gregory Martin. Because it wasn’t Scott’s sense of humor alone that engulfed me. It was his heart. When people die, we automatically (typically to make ourselves feel better) conjure up memories of how good they were. How righteous they were. How interesting they were. Martin wasn’t righteous. But interesting, I’ll give him. Fade back to speech class back in High School. There was a lad named Scott Hall who should have graduated with us. He didn’t. He got Cancer early and died before what we would consider his time. Martin spoke on that. Hall was his best bud at the time. Never the scholastic dude, Martin gave a speech on Hall’s passing. It was genuine. And it was real. Few faces throughout that room made it out that day without a tear duct showing… Actual tears. Scott Gregory Martin was a friend, and my best one, for a significant chunk of my life. Even though we faded, akin to the morning as it makes its way to the eve, it was special to me. I’ll never forget or regret the lad. I love you Scott Martin. Take it easy on the Gods. In the end, they sort all this shit out.
