It was the first Shakespearean play to be presented in America. Facing our mortality Rev Walter Weiss “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3.19 Most of us are uncomfortable with death in general, and specifically our own mortality. We go to great lengths to ignore it, pretending our lives will go on forever. Then, something shatters our world, a dear friend or relative dies, and we are forced to deal with the inevitable. The ritual of Ash Wednesday gives us an opportunity to reflect on our own most certain departure from this life. When we understand that we are each spiritual beings having a temporary physical existence, we can put our lives into better perspective. We can be challenged to live each day to the fullest and to be grateful for each day we have, while at the same time trusting our eternal spirit to the Divine which dwells in each of us. Today, I give thanks for the gift of life, knowing that my spirit is eternal. Amen.
