Super DIRT Week recap - my point of view... Ive been trying to do this since I got home, but havent had a chance. This recap is my own personal point of view, nobody elses. Wednesday Night - Weedsport: Was anyone else but me wondering where the red clay came from? It looked like something youd see come out of the rust belt... southwestern PA, eastern OH or southern MI. I was told it didnt come from out of state though... its local. WHAT A CROWD!!! Thoroughly impressed. I had just one complaint. The older guy on the red personal scooter needs a stern talking to. The new stands allows handicapped people to take their scooters into the stands. This is all brand new and I am 100% in favor of it. But this guy was going entirely too fast in the stands, and when asked to slow down by more than a dozen other spectators, he greeted them with the finger. Totally uncalled for. More about that guy later... Thursday - Syracuse: Pole day. The track was in excellent shape and got much quicker as the day progressed. I was excited when Dave Rauscher timed in the top 6 and hung in there for quite a while. I would have liked to have seen Dave time later in the day, just to see if he could have bettered his time. It is 167 steps from the TV compound to the crows nest. I swear that the roof gets higher by a couple of steps every year. Remember I was telling you about that old guy on the personal scooter? He strikes again. The dude has one leg and apparently is more mobile than you would think. After shooting time trials, I came down from the roof and saw a red electric scooter in the stands. Not a soul was in the stands except me. I get down to the TV compound and a woman comes out from under the stands saying that some guy needed help getting back to his scooter in the stands. Before we could go investigate, the guy is riding his scooter out of the stands and scolding us for not helping him quick enough. Sure enough... same obnoxious prick that was at Weedsport the night before. More on him later... Friday - Syracuse day 2: Started the day at 9am running camera cable from inside turn 3 back to the TV compound, then spent the rest of the day up in the crows nest shooting video for DirTVision. When I say the rest of the day, I meant it. With the exception of going to the infield concession stand between round 2 of time trials and the start of the evening festivities, I never left the roof. I was on my feet from 9am until after 11pm with the exception of that brief ride to the infield on a golf cart. And man... tmy feet are STILL killing me. Speaking of concession stands... NY State can stick their concession stands up their ass! I heard people telling me they were charging $6 for a beer and another $1 for a cup to pour it in. And $4 for a bottle of water and $7 hot dogs? For real??? I REALLY like the night racing at Syracuse. Some people say its too fast and dangerous. Thats YOUR opinion. I like it because it gives Syracuse a Saturday Night atmosphere. I WOULD like to see a couple of changes though... Id like to see the Pro Stocks be a part of the show, and I STILL want my favorite Modified event at Super DIRT Week put back on the schedule... The Winners Classic, and it should be run under the lights!!! Sorry... there should be a 35 lap feature for just the cars that have won a feature at their home DIRTcar sanctioned track. Saturday - Syracuse Day 3, and Rolling Wheels: I really didnt expect much out of the USAC event with only 15 cars entered, but I was wrong. The final 10 to 15 laps were as entertaining as any class turning laps on the mile was. I thought the track held up particularly well for a track lit by the sun all day, and especially after the sportsman and 358s beat it up all day. I was in turn 3 as usual and the giant crater that normally develops at the end of the back stretch never happened. After Syracuse I had to shoot video for the jumbotron at Rolling Wheels. Again, with the exception of the short drive down Route 5 from Syracuse to Elbridge, I was on my feet all day. By now they ache like I walked all day barefoot in gravel. Speaking of Gravel... does anyone know the inside story between Donny Schatz and David Gravel? This was 2 interviews in a row Ive heard where Schatz took verbal jabs at Gravel... The National Open and now Rolling Wheels. Chad Homans wreck in the Mod feature was scary. Glad the injuries turned out to be superficial, all things considered. It sure didnt look like it was going to be that way in the immediate moments after the crash though. And what a show Ryan Susice put on in the Jeremie Corcoran 3c to win the Win and youre in feature. Entertaining stuff!! SDW Sunday: If someone could explain to me why you would intentionally bypass the rev chip at SDW, Id like to hear it. I mean seriously... do you really think tech is going to look the other way on that? We all know who it was - no need to name names there. I am just looking to hear realistic reasons why someone might do it. Rob Yetmans car is absolutely beautiful and I told him so on Sunday. MAN that car is pretty! I was heartbroken. I like both Billy Dunn and Ryan Susice, and to see them be involved in the same wreck just wasnt fair. Timmy McCreadie was right. He said that Syracuse and the name McCreadie dont go hand in hand, and it is now 2 years in a row where he was in great position to win the show and was snake bit. Ill go on record right now and say he wins it next year. Anyone who says there is no passing at Syracuse is full of shit and Ryan Godown, Brett Hearn, Carey Terrance, Larry Wight and Stewart Friesen are proof of that. Speaking of Hearn and Friesen, who ever heard of a shock change during the 200? I thought that was not only odd, but both cars were fast as hell afterwards. And I was thinking the whole time that their days were over. Shows what I know I guess. Speaking of Hearn, HOW did he run out of fuel?? He was in the pits more than anyone was. I certainly didnt see that one coming... And with that, Super DIRT Week is behind us and for many of us, the closer for season 2014. I still have the World Finals to do, and then the depression starts. As much as I love this time of year, I also hate it.
