Super Spartan – August 24th 2013 – Part III It was a beautiful summer day as we began the journey of what would be a very challenging and long race. The longest one I have ever done. We were excited and ready to go. About 30 seconds into the race we hit our first hill and they just kept coming, one after another. The longest hill was over a mile long and took 24 minutes to climb. I thought I would never make it to the top. You couldn’t look up, you just had to look right in front of you, put one foot in front of the other and just keep going. In between the hills we traversed rocks and creeks going up and down. During this time we also faced 20 obstacles, some of them were the same ones we faced in the Spartan Sprint but there were also some new ones. Some were fun like the water slide and swimming under the inner tubes and some grueling like carrying a heavy log down and back up yet another hill. I was defeated by the same 4 obstacles that defeated me in the Sprint, the rope climb, javelin throw, monkey bars, and the traversing wall. I am my own worst critic and my toughest competitor, so in those moments I was frustrated with myself for not being able to complete those particular obstacles. In the past I would have felt like I failed but this time I knew that I had not failed. Though I was defeated by them again, this time I got closer to the top or the end than I had the last. I was able to recognize why I did not complete them, on the monkey bars it was because fear set in and it got the best of me, I did not make it to the top of the rope because I was so physically exhausted, the spear hit my target but not with enough force to stick, and I fell from the wall because my leg was two feet too short. It took us 4 hours and 41 minutes to complete this course. I was fatigued beyond what I had ever experienced, especially my legs from all the hills. This race pushed me to my limits but I will be back to race another day. I will have another opportunity on November 9th to complete these same 4 obstacles that continue to challenge me. I know that I will give it my all again and will not give up until I defeat them. So until then here are a few of my souvenirs from the race
