Supercession in its most literal sense: church built over pagan - TopicsExpress

Supercession in its most literal sense: church built over pagan temple. Many such cases are known, most dramatically the Vatican over the Phrygianum, with its temples to the Magna Mater and Mithras. The name of the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva means St Mary Over [the goddess] Minerva. In Athens and Rome, some temples were repurposed as churches.
