Supplement Education Week Day #4: CAFFEINE is used in many - TopicsExpress

Supplement Education Week Day #4: CAFFEINE is used in many dietary/herbal supplements as a weight loss ingredient. It can be called many different names depending on from where it is being derived. Some labels do not give an exact amount listing it is part of a “proprietary blend” where some will list the exact amount per serving. Caffeine is considered a stimulant and can affect the CNS (central nervous system), the CVS (cardiovascular system) and secondary hypokalemia (low potassium levels). Some symptoms you may see include, but are not limited to; agitation, restlessness, hyperactivity or other abnormal behavior; vomiting; panting; increased heart rate; weakness; difficulty walking/standing; muscle tremors, seizure activity and hyperthermia. As always, early decontamination and supportive care is important for a good prognosis. Once CNS and CVS symptoms develop prognosis is more guarded. To determine if veterinary care is necessary, contact a local veterinary facility or Pet Poison Helpline for assistance. Note: Caffeine is also found in some cold/flu medications, OTC headache medications, energy drinks, coffee, some teas and chocolate.
