Support Ontario’s plan to restrict neonicotinoids! As part of its new Pollinator Health Action Plan, the Ontario government has proposed regulations that will reduce the use of neonicotinoid-treated soy and corn seeds by 80 per cent by 2017. Tell the government it’s on the right track! Neonic pesticides are highly toxic to bees and also threaten other organisms like birds, butterflies and earthworms. Harmful effects include impaired memory, lower reproduction rates and increased susceptibility to disease. Ontario is the first jurisdiction in North America to propose regulatory restrictions on these pesticides. That’s good news for the birds and bees — and for the rest of us whose food supply depends on pollinators. But so far, it’s just a proposal. And the multi-billion dollar pesticide industry is fiercely fighting to make the government back down. Help protect bees! Encourage Ontario to follow through and implement restrictions on neonics. Submit a comment in support of Ontario’s pollinator health proposal. Personalize the message to maximize your impact — extra points for persuasive puns and apian alliteration! Comments can also be submitted through an online form on the Ontario Environmental Bill of Rights Registry. Take action now! The comment period closes January 25, 2015.
