Supporting Practicing at Home: Everyone knows that a key to musical success is consistent and effective practicing. But sometimes it can be hard to know how to get a healthy practicing routine going. Here are some suggestions for parents and families on how to build and support these habits: - Schedule a regular time for practice. Even if its only 20-30 minutes every so-often, having a regular practicing window available that doesnt conflict with chores and other homework can go a long way. A half-hour before dinner time every-other day works well, and gives your student a set amount of time to manage and to set goals for. - Make sure that your student has a comfortable, well lit space to practice in where they have a reasonable amount of privacy. A folding wire music stand doesnt take up much space, and lets your child practice more flexibly. - Praise work done well. A congratulatory comment interjected in a practice session builds self esteem and motivation to practice again soon. - Never use practicing as a punishment. Practicing might have to be rescheduled based on other events, and forcing a student to practice can suck the motivation to improve out of the equation. -Spend time listening to your child practice. Ask for your favorite song and how they did in their last rehearsal and encourage your child to play for others and family. When wrong notes occur make these suggestions: Practice small chunks of the music, then fit the hard parts back into the whole song. Try singing or speaking difficult rhythms, and then go back to playing them. Take a break from a frustrating spot, and come back to it later when youre not as anxious about getting it right. Encourage your student to listen to great examples of musicians who play their instrument, there are some really cool players out there. Finally if you have any questions about what your student should be practicing or how else you can support what they do in music, never hesitate to get in touch with my-self or Mr. Bryant. Happy Music-ing!
