Supraglacial lakes, formed on the surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet from melted snow and ice, have been presumed to have little impact on ice loss, but new research indicates that their impact may have been greatly underestimated. A new study indicates that these lakes will migrate farther inland over the next half century, potentially accelerating ice loss and altering the ice sheet flow in dramatic ways.
