Supreme Court Ruling Endangers Florida Residents by Allowing the Legalization of Marijuana to Move Forward (Bradenton, FL) The Florida Supreme Court reviewed the proposed amendment and in a narrow 4-3 decision allowed the cleverly worded marijuana legalization initiative on the ballot. “It is extremely unfortunate that the Supreme Court ruled to approve the proposed amendment. If this is passed, it will create a major change in Florida’s law and culture. I can assure you that it will not be in the best interest of Floridians,” said Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition Project Director Jessica Spencer, EdD. “The vagueness and loopholes in the initiative will create de-facto marijuana legalization, plain and simple. The devil is in the details, and we will spend the time necessary to educate Florida voters about the harms of marijuana and the deceptiveness of this campaign. In the end, I am optimistic that Floridians will realize what a Trojan horse this is and reject it, continued Dr. Spencer. The real issue here is that this amendment is wide open to significant abuses, noted Dr. Fabian Ramos, Manatee Medical Society incoming president. As it is written this amendment allows marijuana certifications (non prescription necessary) for any condition which qualifies just by the “belief” of a physician (physician does not need to be a medical physician) that it will be beneficial, even in the absence of objectivity (objectivity not required). “It will “allow anyone, at any age and with any condition” to get marijuana. It will allow our children to go “confidentially” to “marijuana centers” reporting subjective and unable to be proven symptoms such as nausea, lack of appetite or pain that will be potentially sufficient to receive marijuana in unknown dosages and being the victims of proven harmful effects. It makes a mockery out of our nation’s practice of medicine and its approval process for determining effectiveness, dosages, and safety of medications” concluded Dr. Ramos. Jessica Spencer, EdD and Dr. Ramos will be speaking at Tiger Bay on February 6 If you would like to set up an interview about this issue with Dr. Spencer, or other policy experts, please contact MCSAC at 941-749-3030.
