Surfers were secretly taking on giant Mavericks, in northern California, but no one was yet surfing Jaws in Hawaii (tow-ins hadnt been invented), or risking Tahitis Teahaupo when it was monstrous, so when Mount Maunganui artist Willy Nicholls did this airbrush painting in 1989 people were going, Naah, thats impossible, no one could surf a wave like that! For a start the wave is so steep, the lip is coming down so hard, and secondly the wall (not shown in this scan) was so enormously long that it looked like sheer fantasy. Fast forward 25 years and its now common for surfers to take the drop on waves this size, or bigger, in fact thanks to the Waverunner and a tow rope its not unusual for a surfer to get a dozen waves of this size in a single session. Willy moved to the Gold Coast quite a few years ago, as Mount surfers tend to do, and is working as an artist for Mt Woodgee Surfboards in Currumbin, as well as doing freelance art, as you can see in the following link. pinterest/willbec1212/willy-nicholls-art/
