Surfing is such a wonderful thing and the club environment is such a wonderful atmosphere, you’re getting up early even in the middle of winter and slipping on a wetsuit just on sun up – you’re learning to surf early. And it’s such a wonderful atmosphere for all of us and especially for the young junior girl grommets, they’re not only learning surfing early, they’re learning to begin life early, to get up early in the morning and be inspired and embrace the day, getting into waves, into the day and into life. No other sportsperson is connecting or engaging and learning to master their equipment on a dynamic shifting platform – the ocean - like we as surfers are. We have double the amount to accomplish and double the amount of workload compared to other sports. But I also believe that in exchange for that as surfers, we get double the amount of fun and double the amount of endorphins! To become a good surfer, Firstly- be part of a club – in the club atmosphere you are surrounded by other people that are just as passionate and inspired by surfing as you are. You learn to compete at surfing in an environment that is gradual over the course of each year. What “heat” surfing teaches you, is this – you gradually learn to surf in a set –time frame. The set-time frame helps speed up your surfing and helps speed up your mindset, so your mind/thinking is moving at the same pace if not faster than you are moving on the board. If your mind is thinking faster than you are surfing then you are going to perform your manoeuvres better and know what to do on the wave as the wave is unfolding in front of you. Your mind needs to be ahead of your surfing action – you need to become a thinking surfer. Heat surfing helps you learn to surf quicker and respond quicker and develop quicker reflexes which then makes you surf with better performance. Its honestly not really about winning the heat, even though that feels good to get a high placing result, its more about how you have learned to perform and about learning to surf quicker and better in a set time frame. Heat surfing adds structure to your surfing, so therefore you will naturally improve quicker. Secondly – Surf with better surfers. You can’t help but get good when you are surfing with better surfers and it just moves you out of comfort zones and into performance zone so much faster, when you are surfing with better surfers. Thirdly – you have to make time for surfing. It’s that simple. Surfing has to move up around the top of your values list. if you’re only having one 2 hour session per week then by the time that session rolls around again then your will spend the first hour being stiff and re-learning your technique and the next hour sitting and waiting for waves If you can’t fit surfing into your life, then change your life. Let’s see where surfing sits in your values list; Here’s a little quiz 1. How do you fill your personal space 2. How do you spend your time 3. How do you spend your energy 4. How do you spend your money 5. Where do you have the most order and organisation 6. Where are you most reliable, disciplined and focused 7. What do you think about and what is your most dominant thought 8. What do you visualise and realise 9. What is your internal dialogue 10. What do you talk about in social settings 11. What inspires you 12. What are the most consistent long-term goals that you set 13. What do you to learn about most If you have answered surfing to most of these then you are on the right path to becoming a great surfer. If not then then consider re-structuring your life and value system so you can become a great surfer.
