Surgical tool spreading cancer: Johnson & Johnson has been selling a device called laparoscopic power morcellator to remove benign fibroids and to perform hysterectomies. This tool has spread cancer in thousands of women. Uterine cancers...can masquerade as benign fibroids and cant be reliably detected before surgery, a Wall Street Journal article stated. In April the FDA said women undergoing surgery for fibroids have a 1 in 350 risk that the growths are actually cancerous...and has estimated the tool was being used in 50,000 hysterectomies a year. This number does not include fibroid removals without hysterectomies. Gynecologists had previously estimated that risk to be 1 in 10,000! Translation: The risk of spreading cancer throughout a womans body using this tool is 2,900% worse than previously estimated. source: WSJ July 30, 2014.
