In his new book, former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner claims the Obama administration asked him to mislead to the country on the economy. Geithner writes in, “Stress Test: Reflections on Financial Crises,” about a conversation with White House insiders Stephanie Cutter and Dan Pfeiffer before appearing on the Sunday talk shows. “I objected when Dan Pfeiffer wanted me to say Social Security didn’t contribute to the deficit. It wasn’t a main driver of our future deficits, but it did contribute. Pfeiffer said the line was a ‘dog whistle’ to the left, a phrase I had never heard before,” Geithner wrote. Bob Cusack, managing editor of The Hill, reacted to this revelation on America’s Newsroom. He noted that people from the administration are often prepped before interviews. “This is Geithner saying, ‘wait a minute. The spin is too much. I’m not going to go that far. Social Security does add a bit to the deficit,’” he said. Geithner’s comments come just weeks after White House emails revealed that former UN Secretary Susan Rice was told to blame protests on a video during her appearances on the Sunday talk shows shortly after the 2012 Benghazi attack. Cusack said, “There are going to be parallels brought between the Rice and the Geithner prep for the Sunday shows because Republicans say that it was all spin and the administration didn’t even believe what it was saying.”
