Surviving in Milan... some random thoughts and observations in no particular order: While driving you must either... - Be using one hand to hold a phone to your ear while wildly gesturing with the other and steering the car with your knee - Be texting with one hand while wildly gesturing with the other and steering with your knee If you have 1mm between your car and another car, that is 2 to 4 mm (possibly even 5mm) more than you actually need. Parking is done by Braille (similar to parking in Paris)... you back into the car behind you, then drive forward until you run into the car in front... repeat until you are parked. Pedestrians have the right of way... unless they flinch or acknowledge the oncoming car in any way... then all bets are off. Motorcycles are king... and are expected to squeeze right up to the front of the line of cars at a traffic light. A parking place is where you make it... middle of the busy street... on the sidewalk... in a construction zone, etc. Emergency vehicles with sirens and flashing lights do not have the right of way. No one will get out of the way for fear of loosing their spot. Queuing at the grocery store is similar to the way traffic lights are managed... push and clump your way to the front of the line regardless of who was in the queue before you. If you are scheduled to do something at 10:00, the actual time for your meeting is at least 90 minutes later... or maybe the next day... if they remember. The puddles and stains in front of buildings are NOT water... The locals love their dogs... there are huge fenced parks dedicated exclusively as free spaces for dogs where they can run and play off-leash. There are pizza places EVERYWHERE Fashion is king... and style is everything If you are missing the number plates for your car, you can just make new ones out of a bit of paper and some packing tape Coffee is life... you must drink coffee, particularly espresso
