Survivors of last Saturday’s machete attack that left two people dead and six others wounded in Amanuke community, Awka-North Local Government Area, Anambra State, have recounted their close shave with death. The residents witnessed a chilling bloodbath at the weekend when a 22- year-old man, Chidiebele Mmadubuko, ran amok and turned the peaceful village to a slaughter field. He killed his 58-year-old mother, Mrs Mercy Mmadubuko, his kinsman, Nwakwudo Igwebudu, stabbed his father and five other villagers. The assailant was reportedly killed by angry youths, who overpowered him in a fierce confrontation. One of the survivors, Mrs Grace Ekemezie, said the assailant stormed her shop that night with a machete to cut her body to pieces. Hear her: “I was in my shop around 10pm or thereabout when Chidi came to my shop, telling me that he would kill me, that I will die now not knowing he has a machete. He was busy cutting on my protector and the door thinking it was me. From there, he ventured into my shop destroying all my goods. Because the shop was dark, he could not see me, else I would have been dead by now. He descended on those who came to my rescue, cutting them wherever he could reach.” Ekemezie said she saw the assailant descend on his mother, Mrs Mmadubuko, with a machete, cutting her randomly on the head and other parts of her body. “He left my shop and descended on a small boy who was going to get their phone from a nearby shop. When his mother now came, calling on him to stop, thinking he would respect her and calm down, he descended on his mother. When the mother now started running for safety, he pursued her to the spot where he killed others,” she said. Ekemezie said she had been in shock since the incident, adding that her blood pressure has shot up within a few hours. When asked how Chidiebele was killed, she said she had no idea as she ran back to her house for safety. An eyewitness, who does not want to be named, said he overheard the late Mmadubuko boasting that it was time to kill the ‘snakes’, as he called himself the only ‘lion’ that could kill all the snakes in the village. Another victim, Mr Obiefuna Okolo, said Mmadubuko hit him with a cutlass when he wanted to rescue some of his victims. He said: “I was in the shop that night with a sister who owns the shop discussing. The boy came threatening to kill her, but we never knew he has a machete with him. So, before we could understand what was happening, he descended on the lady, but she sustained no injury as she ran inside the shop, shouting on top of her voice for help. Just then I pounced on him to wrestle him to the ground, but he escaped from my grips and flung his machete at me, leaving me with cuts on my head and other parts of the body.” Okolo pleaded with the government to assist families who were worse hit by the unfortunate incident. However, Mrs Faith Igwebudu, whose husband was equally murdered, could not be reached as she was still in shock. Sources revealed that her husband went to save his tenant, also called Ogbo-ogu, before he met his untimely death.
