Susan Webb originates from upstate New York and received her BSc in Geophysics from SUNY Binghamton, USA. She then moved to Newfoundland, Canada, where she received her MSc in geophysics from Memorial University. In search of warmer weather and adventure she moved to South Africa and worked for several years as an exploration geophysicist for Gold Fields of South Africa. Currently she is a senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, specializing in research on the interpretation and modelling of gravity and magnetic data. Her PhD, which was awarded from Wits University, presented a combined interpretation of seismic and gravity data of the Kaapvaal Craton using results from the international Kaapvaal Project. Sue also runs the highly successful AfricaArray international geophysics field school held annually as part of the Wits Honours geophysics program. This field school hosts selected students from all over Africa and the world. In 2005 she was jointly awarded the Jubilee medal from the Geological Society of South Africa for the best paper in the South African Journal of Geology. In 2006 her technical presentation at the SEG meeting in New Orleans was cited as one of the top 30 papers presented. In 2007 she was elected as a Fellow of the GSSA and has been honoured by SAGA with the “Meritorious Service” award. She was a founding committee member for the SEG initiative “Geoscientists without Borders” and served as SEG second vice president in 2010-2011. In 2010 she was the SEG Honorary Lecturer for Africa and the Middle East. Her current research projects involve further analysis of a variety of borehole datasets, continued investigations into Bushveld Complex, geophysics applied to ground water challenges in Africa, and the three dimensional modelling of potential field data in southern Africa. She is currently serving on the board of directors of SEG Global Inc and has been elected to the board of directors of AGU as the International Secretary for 2013-2015.
