Suspect in custody after assault at Andalusia Walmart; Sheriff Meeks injured but gets his man Just after 8 a.m. Sunday morning, Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks and his wife Altheia stopped by the Andalusia Walmart to purchase a few items before heading to church. While inside the store, Sheriff Meeks recognized a man he believed had pending felony warrants in Covington County. Meeks contacted Covington County Command Center and confirmed the man in fact had two felony warrants, one for Receiving Stolen Property and one for Violation of Probation. Sheriff Meeks said he approached the male subject near the customer service desk and checkout counters and informed the man of the pending warrants and the man attempted to resist arrest and began to flee the store on foot. Meeks and the male reportedly had a physical altercation inside the store, but the man was able to shake free of the sheriffs attempt to place him in handcuffs. Meeks told WAAO, I could see that look in his eyes. That look like I have got to run. Meeks said he told the man not to run, but he did in fact run and put up a big fight in doing so. Meeks said the man exited the grocery door of Walmart and a good Samaritan offered assistance in trying to stop the man from getting away but again the suspect was able to make it to the parking lot where a female was waiting in a white Chevrolet Tahoe to assist him in eluding his inevitable arrest. Sheriff Meeks said, I exited the main middle door of Walmart to try to cut the suspect off in the parking lot and noticed the suspect in an altercation with the good Samaritan who gave chase when the suspect exited the grocery door. After calling for assistance from the Andalusia Police and the deputies working day shift, Sheriff Meeks said he was able to make contact with the suspect once again in the Walmart parking lot where a second altercation occurred while the suspect was attempting to make it to the waiting Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a white female companion. According to eyewitnesses, Sheriff Meeks and the suspect had a pretty tough altercation in the parking lot and once again the good Samaritan offered assistance just as Andalusia Police Officer Matt Wilson arrived to assist. According to Sheriff Meeks, After we were finally able to get the suspect handcuffed, I attempted to put all my weight on my foot and leg and felt a sharp pain. I knew I needed to go to the E.R. to get x-rayed. Meeks did in fact discover at least two fractures near his ankle and has been placed in an air cast and let the hospital on crutches with a Monday morning appointment with Dr. Gill Holland, an orthopedic doctor in Andalusia. Agents with the Covington County Drug Task Force, Andalusia Police, and Covington County Sheriff Deputies all assisted in the case and upon a search of the suspects Chevrolet Tahoe revealed a shake and bake methamphetamine lab, as well as finished product meth, and drug paraphernalia.
