Sustainable solutions needed to cope with Malaysia’s housing problems, says Aussie don VENICE (Italy): There is a pressing need to build sustainable, affordable homes to solve housing woes in Malaysia as the country’s population increases, said Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australias Architecture and Design dean, Dr Richard Blythe. “It isn’t simply about putting bricks together to make a room in a house. There are all sorts of legal, financial, service and social systems that hold together our community,” he said. Blythe’s views were echoed by RMIT Architecture professor Prof Dr Tom Kovac who added that more research was needed to find practical solutions. “Housing problems are not confined to Malaysia. It is a global problem. We have to look at ways so we can produce accessible housing for the worlds population, too,” Kovac said. Both Dr Kovac and Dr Blythe said they are looking forward to the inaugural Malaysian Biennial 100YC, scheduled for August next year. Supported by RMIT and the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry, the Malaysia Biennial 100YC is a global research initiative that is set out to design a vision for the development of Malaysia within the next 100 years, said programme director Mohammad Lutfi Johari.
