Swamp water and Copperheads - On this day in 1863, George E. Cooper (a 20-year-old Union solder from NY), wrote from Coles Island in Lowcountry SC, describing the swampy environment, the severe toll taken on his health, and the brackish water that has a bad taste and smell, such that those in the hospittle are not alowed to drink it - Instead their drinking water was distilled by steam on the boats that lay here in around the islands. Cooper expresses his hopes for an end to the war and his return home in order to help vote out the Copperheads [i.e. Confederate sympathizers in Union states], that is the only way to get them down.
