Swan Rescue... This young swan was rescued this afternoon after he had been observed spending large amounts of time on the edge of a canal at Stenson near Derby. The finder had also noticed he seemed to be scared of going into the water and in the days previously he had been attacked by a resident male swan. We went out and collected him from the canal side. On examination he is thin and covered in swan lice but has strength. We estimate that he is approximately a year old as he still has some grey near his tail. We also noticed that he has grazes to his feet that have probably been caused by him trying to get out of the canal in a hurry. Despite all this he is very alert and seems happy. As a precaution we have treated him for worms as well as the lice. We have taken him to the sanctuary and put him in one of the isolation stables where he can recuperate. He has access to food and water plus a large tray of water so he can bathe himself. When he has gained weight he will go into our swan paddock with the other swans until we can find him a suitable lake or pond to live on. Until then he has some ducks to keep him company. :-)
