Sweet Sammy has had a rough time lately. All the wants is a soft bed to sleep on and a loving family to be a part of. Will you open your heart and home to him? Meet SAMMY Black Male Labrador Mix 10 - 12 years old, Neutered 55 lbs Sweet Sammy was a stray from San Jose Animal Animal Care and Services, in need of urgent rescue as his time was up at the shelter. Thankfully, a wonderful foster stepped up and took him in without hesitation. It is obvious that Sam has belonged to someone. He is sweet but looks like he’s been neglected and out on the streets for a good amount of time. He is pretty skinny and needs to put on some weight. He was understandably anxious at the shelter and quickly settled in to his foster’s home within a few days. He went from constantly wandering the yard and making his rounds within the house, rarely settling, to staying by her side whenever he can. He is housetrained and although he doesn’t prefer it, will settle into his crate when the foster is tending to things around the house. He has been enjoying 30 minute daily walks, and the foster reports that although he does pull a bit, he always sits at her side, patiently, whenever she stops to talk with someone. He is wonderful with other dogs and kids, quite gentle actually. Because he is a senior dog, we would want him around kids who will be easy with him. He interacts well with the fosters two granchildren, who are 7 and 9 and when I picked him up from the shelter, I had my 2 1/2 year-old toddler with me and the two of them stood side by side, patiently, while the foster and I prepared her car for him. If another dog is growly, Sammy does not react and will turn and walk away. We do not know how Sammy is around cats. Update from the foster: Sammy is a sweet guy and seems to have had some training. He is a picky eater and won’t eat unless a little chicken is mixed in with his dry kibble. He’s not into toys or playing fetch, probably because hes never been shown how. He simply wants to be with you. He lays at my feet, when Im sitting at the kitchen table. Sammy likes car rides, although he does try to sneak into the front seat. He does not chew on non-dog items and is not destructive, at all. He loves to be close and will poke my hand with his nose, or nudge my leg to be petted. Sammy has already been to the vet for a wellness check, blood work, shots, microchip and is heartworm negative. He does have some age-related osteoarthritis, but it does not slow him down from his daily walks. He needs to gain a little weight and is making progress in that area. Lab Rescue is looking for a forever family where someone is home most of the day and, or retired. Sam would be ideal with adopters who are not overly active. He’s just happy being with his people, keeping you company and deserves a loving family who will be by his side. Sammy is located in San Jose.
