Sweetie, if I get you right, you said if Im contacted by a member of the public that he or she receives an SMS debit alert from his/ her account via the ATM but without making use/ without making any withdrawal with the card. How can I assist such to get to the root of the fraud? This is a loaded question. Firstly, I need to establish the fact, whether its an error or whether its a fraud that was carried out on the said account. Under normal circumstance, I will make use of TACTICAL APPROACH OF CRIME INVESTIGATION/ RESEARCH. Therere questions which must be answered by the affected person. Some of them include: (1) Was his/ her ATM card misplaced or lost or stolen? (2) If the answer is NO. Then wheres the card ad at the time of the withdrawal alert? (3) Did he or she gave the PIN to someone before in the past? (4) If the answer is NO. Where was he or she as at the time he/ she received such debit alert? (5) When was the last time he/ she made use of the card? And so on and so forth. The reason for all the questions is to find out whether someone close to the affected person may have secretly taken the card without his or knowledge to make withdrawal. I know a person who experienced such a problem when I was in Kano. Hes an illiterate. In his own case, as soon as he collected his ATM card from his bank, he forgot to change the PIN and someone close to him, secretly replaced his card with another ATM card of the same bank. So anytime he made deposit, thr crook would go and make some withdrawal from the account. We only succeeded in blocking the card, but the culprit wasnt nabbed, but I suspected one of that persons son. Back to the issue, the if after asking all these questions, we find out that the affected person has not careless with his/ her card. Then the next is to contact the bank for prompt action, i.e after the card must have been blocked. Later.
