Sweetwater Veterans of Foreign Wars Gold Star Post 5156 and Ladies Auxiliary are proud to announce the start of our Youth Programs for the Year. The Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to sixth –eighth grades. The theme this year is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” This should be a 300–400-word essay, preferably typed, but legible hand written entries will be accepted. The top national prize is a $10,000 savings bond. The deadline for entry is Nov. 1. The Voice of Democracy audio/essay contest is open to ninth – 12th grades. The theme is “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future.” The speech should be 3-5 minutes long and neatly typed. The top national prize is a $30,000 scholarship. The deadline for entry is Nov. 1. The Patriotic Art contest is open to ninth – 12th grades. The art should be on paper or canvas and be at least 8” x 10.” Canvas entries should be on stretcher frames with all other entries matted on white. The top national prize is a $10,000 scholarship. The deadline is March 31, 2014. Home school students can pick up an entry form from one of the area schools, print out a form from the VFW website, or call the contact below.
